Demand the Maximum Penalty for Animal Cruelty Offenses

A Great Dane was found curled up on the side of a Jacksonville road, his body reduced to skin and bone. He was too weak to stand. Too far gone to save himself. Animal Care and Protective Services named him Miracle and rushed him into emergency care, doing everything possible to keep him alive.

But Miracle did not survive. Despite veterinary intervention, his body had endured too much for too long. Staff who cared for him in his final hours said he was already loved — and that someone had failed him a long time ago.

Authorities later identified the person responsible for abandoning him, and she is now facing a felony animal cruelty charge. Investigators determined that Miracle’s condition was not sudden or accidental. His skeletal state was the result of prolonged neglect — suffering that unfolded over weeks, not days.

Cases like this test whether animal cruelty laws are enforced with the seriousness they demand. When neglect reaches this level, when an animal starves to death after being denied basic care, the law must respond with the strongest penalties available.
