The U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority just approved Virginia’s plan to purge 1,600 Virginia residents from its voter rolls right before the 2024 election. This 5-4 decision disregards critical federal protections that are supposed to prevent last-minute purges–protections specifically meant to avoid wrongful disenfranchisement. The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit arguing that Virginia’s purge violates the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA). The law’s “Quiet Period Provision” bans systematic voter removals within 90 days of a federal election to protect eligible voters from being unfairly purged close to Election Day. But that didn't stop the Supreme Court from doing Republicans' bidding. Sign the petition: Denounce the Supreme Court for approving Virginia's last-minute voter purge. The right to vote is foundational to our democracy, and reckless purges threaten this foundation. Wendy Weiser, a voting rights advocate from the Brennan Center, warns, “the voter rolls are the gateway to voting... We should not tolerate purges that are conducted behind closed doors, without public scrutiny, and without adequate recourse for affected voters.” Let's be clear about what this is: A blatant attempt by the Supreme Court to disenfranchise voters to help the Republican Party. It's undemocratic and unAmerican – and we need to fight back. Sign our petition to stand up for democracy—let’s protect the right to vote in Virginia and beyond.
