Expel Accused Domestic Abuser Max Miller from Congress

Representative Max Miller is facing horrifying allegations of domestic violence, child endangerment, and abuse of power — and Speaker Mike Johnson still has not demanded he leave Congress.

Miller’s ex-wife, Emily Moreno, has accused him of physically abusing her and their 2-year-old daughter. The House Ethics Committee has now opened an investigation into allegations involving domestic violence and illegal drug use. 

When Speaker Johnson finally addressed the scandal, he hid behind process and minimized the allegations. He said he had not spoken with Miller in recent days, claimed there are “all sorts of domestic events going on with 435 members of Congress all the time,” and added that it was “not my business to get engaged in it.” 

That is an appalling and unacceptable response from the Speaker of the House.

Tell Speaker Mike Johnson: Stop hiding behind process. Demand Max Miller’s resignation and support his expulsion from Congress.

Johnson has the power to set the standard for his conference. He can call on Miller to resign, remove him from committee assignments, support disciplinary action, and make clear that credible allegations of violence and child endangerment are incompatible with serving in Congress.

Instead, Johnson is making excuses and running interference for Miller in order to maintain control of Congress. That is unacceptable. Survivors already face enormous barriers to being believed, protected, and taken seriously. A Speaker who dismisses alleged abuse as a “domestic event” and refuses to act only makes those barriers higher.

No political seat is worth protecting an accused abuser. No party majority is worth telling women and children that their safety comes second.
