Venezuela has just been hit by devastating earthquakes and the Trump administration is still trying to deport people back into danger. Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas uncovered that just hours after the earthquakes, ICE woke up children and families detained at the Dilley Trailer Prison in Texas in the middle of the night and tried to send them to Venezuela. Right now, Venezuela is dealing with an enormous humanitarian crisis. Thousands of buildings have been destroyed and tens of thousands of people are missing. Hospital services, water, and electricity have all been disrupted. We cannot let ICE send innocent children and families into a disaster zone. Tell Congress to demand that ICE halt deportations to Venezuela and restore humanitarian protections. Venezuelan families in the United States are already living with fear and uncertainty. Many fled political instability, economic collapse, violence, and unsafe conditions. Now, with earthquake damage compounding the crisis, deporting people to Venezuela would be reckless and cruel. Just last week, 146 people deported from the US to Venezuela were staying at a hotel that collapsed during the earthquake – many of them are thought to have been killed. Congress has the power to intervene. Lawmakers can demand records from ICE, press for a formal deportation pause, hold public hearings, and push the administration to restore or redesignate Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans while recovery continues. This is exactly what humanitarian protections are for. When conditions in a country become too dangerous for safe return, the United States should not be forcing people back. Add your name now and demand Congress stop the Trump administration from deporting Venezuelans into a disaster zone. The petition to Congress reads: "Demand that ICE immediately stop deportations to Venezuela, restore or redesignate Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans, review detained Venezuelans for humanitarian release, and stop sending people into a country recovering from devastating earthquakes."
