Artificial Intelligence (AI) is advancing at an unprecedented pace, offering transformative benefits across various sectors. However, these rapid developments also pose significant risks, including potential threats to privacy, security, employment, and even humanity's future. Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in AI, has recently estimated a 10% to 20% chance that AI could lead to human extinction within the next three decades. Congress has already introduced over 120 bills addressing AI in some capacity, ranging from transparency requirements to ethical standards and national security concerns. This legislative activity highlights a growing recognition of the risks posed by AI. Yet, despite these efforts, there is still no comprehensive federal framework ensuring AI technologies are developed and deployed responsibly. President Biden took an important step forward with a historic executive order aimed at ensuring AI safety, accountability, and ethical use. However, with Donald Trump set to take office again in just a few weeks, his administration is expected to rescind this order, leaving the nation exposed to the unchecked growth of AI technologies. To secure our future, Congress must act now to pass common-sense AI safety regulations. These measures should include the establishment of a federally funded AI Safety Institute, transparency and accountability requirements for AI developers, robust safety evaluations, ethical AI development, and public education initiatives. By codifying these protections into law, we can mitigate the risks of AI while fostering innovation that benefits all. Tell Congress to act now before it's too late. AI technologies are advancing rapidly, and the risks are too great to ignore. Sign this petition to demand immediate legislative action to regulate AI and safeguard humanity's future.
