Recent food safety crises have put Americans at risk. First, a deadly listeria outbreak linked to Boar's Head deli meats sickened dozens across multiple states. Then, an E. coli outbreak tied to McDonald's Quarter Pounders resulted in 49 illnesses, 10 hospitalizations, and 1 death. Experts are alarmed. "The FDA is severely underfunded given its enormous responsibility to ensure food safety," says Dr. Michael Hansen, senior scientist at Consumer Reports. "More resources are urgently needed for inspections, testing, and enforcement." That's why we're demanding an increase in the FDA's food safety budget to help ensure the safety of our food supply. With an increased budget, the FDA could expand inspections of food production facilities, improve testing and monitoring for foodborne pathogens, strengthen enforcement of food safety regulations and modernize food safety technology and practices. This would lead to fewer foodborne illness outbreaks, quicker identification and containment of contaminated products, and a safer food supply for all Americans. Sign our petition to demand Congress increase the FDA's food safety budget. Our health depends on it.
