Tell Meta: Reinstate Protections for LGBTQ People

Meta has taken a dangerous and cruel step backward by weakening its policies against hate speech targeting LGBTQ people. Recent reports reveal that the company’s new rules will allow users to misgender transgender individuals and even label LGBTQ people as "mentally ill."

This heartless policy change will inevitably lead to a surge in anti-LGBTQ hate speech and discrimination across Meta’s platforms, putting millions of users at risk.

This decision is not just irresponsible—it’s a complete abdication of Meta’s responsibility to protect its users from harm. Hate speech and misinformation targeting LGBTQ communities have real-world consequences, including increased harassment, mental health struggles, and even violence. By rolling back these protections, Meta is actively enabling this harm.

The timing of this decision is especially alarming, as anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and attacks are on the rise nationwide. Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have long been breeding grounds for this hate, but until now, Meta had policies in place to mitigate some of the damage. Now, it’s not just failing to keep its users safe—it’s no longer even trying.

We call on Meta to immediately reinstate its protections for LGBTQ people and strengthen its policies against hate speech. Every user deserves to feel safe and respected online, and Meta must do its part to combat discrimination—not fuel it.

Sign this petition to demand that Meta reverse its harmful policy changes and recommit to standing against hate.
