Donald Trump and his conspiracy-obsessed buddy RFK Jr. have big plans to shake up the government once he retakes power in January — and the National Health Institute is squarely in their crosshairs. 

“I do think you probably will see changes in NIH as well as other public health agencies, like CDC and maybe even FDA,” says Dr. Joel Zinberg, who works for a right-wing think tank. Those changes could be beyond disastrous for the future of American medical research and our fight to find cures for serious diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Trump tried to pass billions of dollars in funding cuts for the NIH during his first term, while the Project 2025 authors at the Heritage Foundation have been hungering to take an axe to the NIH, proposing closing down at least 12 of the NIH’s institutes and centers.RFK Jr, for his part, has already begun plotting to fire at least 600 NIH employees on day 1 of Trump’s second term. 

Doctors and health advocates are understandably terrified. “Why would you want to dismantle an institute that is the leading research institute in the world?” asks Ellie Dehoney, a senior vice president at the Research!America nonprofit. “It would be like saying, ‘Let’s undo our national defense and block grant it.’ There’s no reason to take a successful institution and dismantle it.”

She’s absolutely right. We cannot allow Trump and his cronies to put the future of American medical research in jeopardy.
